Every week on Thursdays our momstown Mississauga moms gather for the Baby Basics program and on a regular basis make beautiful pieces of art during Baby Picassos! These works of art make great keepsakes and the footprint art is also a wonderful way to track your baby’s growth.
Beyond the cuteness of baby footprints there are many benefits of introducing art to infants. Art allows children to explore with their senses and yes, dipping tiny toes in paint counts!
Babies learn through all of their senses and art allows them to explore primarily using touch and sight. For example, when our momstown babies have their feet dipped into paint or onto a stamp pad this is a new and different feeling sensation. Each baby is unique and all babies react differently to this experience; some may enjoy it, others might appear curious and some may be uncomfortable or unsure. The experience of making footprints allow them to try something new while in a safe and supportive environment, feel something different, and learn from a very young age that it is safe and can be fun to explore new textures, colours, temperatures and materials.
Furthermore, the process of making footprints teaches babies about cause and effect; they learn that when they dip their foot into the paint and then press it onto the paper it leaves a mark!
There are many other art activities that are fun for babies so stay tuned for future posts about them. Join us Thursdays at Baby Basics Program in Mississauga to try making footprint art for yourself! A Program Pass is $85 per year and all the supplies are included!
